There are a few new options for configuring your Azure Kubernetes Service cluster that are currently in preview.

  • The first one let you select Ubuntu 18.04 as the OS version, the default being 16.04.
  • The second one let you select containerd as the container runtime, the default being Moby.
  • The third one is the availability of Gen 2 VMs for the worker nodes.

Microsoft states that by using containerd, pod startup latency improves and node resource consumption by the container runtime decreases.  Note that the nodes OS must be Ubuntu 18.04 and that docker commands (ex: docker ps) won't work if issued directly on the nodes, you'll have to use crictl instead.
